WASD Trainer

Practise FPS movement with three keyboard mini-games: dodge homing enemies, strafe to collect targets, and drill counter-strafing to stop on a spot. Free, runs in your browser, tracks your best per mode.

Mode

Red dots spawn at the edges and slowly home in on you. They get faster and more frequent. Survive as long as you can.

How the WASD trainer works

Why movement matters in FPS games

In CS2 and Valorant, bullets fired while moving fly wide. You are only accurate when you are nearly still, so good players stop for a split second, shoot, then move again. Releasing a key lets you slide to a stop. Tapping the opposite key (counter-strafing) cancels momentum much faster. Strafe patterns like A-D spam and short jiggle peeks are built from the same quick starts and stops.

What each mode trains

Dodge builds reactive movement under pressure: enemies spawn at the edges, curve toward you and speed up over time. Collect is 60 seconds of targets and hazards. Each target adds 1 point and each hit removes 1 point. Diagonal speed matches a straight move. Counter-strafe uses momentum and friction, so letting go of a key coasts and pressing the opposite key brakes. A stop counts when peak speed reached at least 40 percent of top speed and you then drop under 20 (about 8 percent of top speed) with the center of the dot inside the ring. Time starts when you begin to slow down. From top speed in a straight line, an opposite tap takes about 90 to 130 ms and letting go takes about 300 ms. The result label compares your stop with letting go from the speed you had. The physics are a simplified model, not the exact numbers of any game.

Finger placement

Rest your ring finger on A, middle on W (sliding to S), and index on D. Keep your thumb on Space and your little finger near Shift and Ctrl. Light, short taps beat hard presses: you want to release a key as fast as you press the other one. For pure reaction speed, compare with the reaction time test.

Does your keyboard keep up?

Diagonal movement plus jump or crouch means three or four keys at once. Cheap boards can drop key combos, so check yours with the keyboard ghosting test. Rapid-trigger (Hall effect or analog) keyboards reset a key as soon as it starts to rise instead of at a fixed point, which can shave a few milliseconds off each counter-strafe. They help at the margins; timing and habit matter more. The browser only sees key down and key up, not how far a key travels.

Limits worth knowing

The game pauses when you click away, switch tabs or the window loses focus, and held keys are released so you never drift. Your best score per mode is saved only in this browser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which keys move the player?

W moves up, A moves left, S moves down and D moves right. The arrow keys do the same. On an AZERTY keyboard the physical WASD spots are labeled Z, Q, S and D, and those are the keys that move you. Holding two directions moves on a diagonal at the same speed as a straight line. A key that is already held does not speed you up when it repeats. Letting the key up stops that direction.

Do the arrow keys work?

Yes. Up, Down, Left and Right move you the same way as W, A, S and D, and you can hold one set with the other. The board swallows those keys only while it is focused, so the page does not scroll during a round. Click outside the board, or move focus to a question below, and the arrows scroll the page again.

What are the three modes?

Dodge runs until a red dot catches you. Dots spawn at the edges, curve toward you and speed up over time. The score is seconds survived, to a tenth of a second. Collect is 60 seconds: each yellow target adds 1 point and each red hazard you touch removes 1 point. The score never drops below zero. Counter-strafe is 60 seconds. A point is a stop inside the ring after you reached at least 40 percent of top speed and then dropped under 20, about 8 percent of top speed.

How do I start, pause and restart?

Click Start, or focus the board and press Space or Enter. From the ready screen, W, A, S, D or an arrow also starts the round. P or Escape pauses. Space, Enter, P or Escape resumes. R restarts. Switching mode cancels the round that was running. Changing tab, clicking outside the board or leaving the window pauses and clears held keys.

What counts as a counter-strafe?

Counter-strafe mode keeps momentum. Letting go slows you by friction alone. Pressing the opposite direction brakes harder, so you stop sooner. From top speed in a straight line, letting go takes about 300 ms to fall under the stop speed, and a clean opposite tap takes about 90 to 130 ms. The result label compares each scored stop with letting go from that same speed and direction. About half of that coast, or less, is a counter-strafe. Close to the full coast is coasting. In between is partial. The FIRE lamp lights whenever speed is under 20, scored or not. The numbers are a simple model, not CS2 or Valorant.

Where is my best score saved?

Each mode keeps its own best in this browser. A finished round replaces that best only when the score is higher and above zero. Scores stay on this device. Clearing site data for this site removes them.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Not with the touch screen. The drills need keys you can hold down. If the device looks like a phone or tablet, the page says so. Plug in a keyboard or open the page on a computer.
