About this voice recorder

Private by design: nothing is uploaded

Many “free online recorders” send your audio to a server to process or store it, which is a strange deal for a voice memo. This one records with your browser's built-in MediaRecorder, keeps each take in the tab's memory and hands you the file directly. There is no account and no upload, and the page keeps working if you go offline after it loads. The catch is the flip side of that: close or reload the tab and unsaved takes are gone, so download what you want to keep.

Tips for a clean recording

Keep the mic about a hand's width (10 to 20 cm) from your mouth and slightly off to the side to soften popping P and B sounds. A small room with soft furnishings, curtains or a closet full of clothes sounds far better than a bare kitchen. Turn off fans and close the window.

Watch the level bar while you speak: normal speech should land around a half to three quarters, and the clipping warning means you are too loud or too close. Auto gain evens out levels for calls but can pump up background noise in pauses; turn it off for singing or instruments, along with noise suppression, which can make music sound watery. Check your setup first with the mic test.

File formats: WebM, M4A and WAV

Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM with the Opus codec: small (about 1 MB per few minutes of speech) and good quality. It plays in browsers, VLC and Audacity, but QuickTime, Apple Music and some older Windows players will not open it. Chrome also leaves the duration out of the file header, so some players show the length as unknown until they reach the end.

Safari records M4A (AAC), which opens nearly everywhere, including iPhones, Windows and WhatsApp. WAV export decodes the take and saves it as uncompressed 16-bit PCM: roughly 5 to 10 MB per minute, but every editor and transcription service accepts it. Converting does not add quality back; it only makes the file easier to open.

Phones and iOS Safari

iPhones and iPads can record here in Safari on iOS 14.3 or later, and in Chrome or Firefox on iOS, which use the same engine. Recording usually stops if you lock the screen or switch apps, so keep the page in front. On Android, Chrome records WebM like on desktop. If the browser asked once and you said no, the permission has to be changed in the site settings before Record will work again.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What if I block microphone permission?

Press Record and the browser asks for the microphone. If you block it, or the system blocks the browser, the page shows a message that microphone access was blocked and stays idle. The timer does not start and no recording is kept. Allow the microphone for this site from the lock or mic icon in the address bar, then press Record again. On iPhone, allow it under Settings, then Safari, then Microphone. A missing mic, or one another app is using, gets its own message.

Does my recording get uploaded?

No. Recording uses the microphone stream inside this tab. Each take is a blob held in memory, and the player plays that blob. Download saves that same blob to your computer. Nothing is sent to a server. This browser only remembers the microphone you picked and the noise, echo and auto-gain switches, not the audio. Close or reload the tab and any take you have not downloaded is gone.

What file format does the recorder save?

Whatever this browser can record. The page asks for WebM with Opus first, then M4A (AAC), then OGG with Opus, then plain WebM, and uses the first type MediaRecorder supports. Chrome, Edge and Firefox usually save WebM. Safari usually saves M4A. The label on the take is the type that was actually recorded. WAV is not requested from the recorder. Export WAV decodes the finished take in the browser and writes a separate 16-bit PCM file. That file is larger and does not add quality.

How do I stop a recording?

Press Stop. The timer freezes immediately. When the recorder finishes the file, every microphone track is stopped and the take is added to the list. The Space key starts a take, pauses it or resumes it. It does not stop. Pause leaves the microphone on so Resume can continue the same take. Closing the tab or leaving the page stops the tracks as well, and discards a take that has not been stopped yet.

How do I download the clip I just recorded?

Press Stop, then Download on that take. The file is the blob from that take, named from the take name plus the real extension, such as Recording 1.webm, Recording 1.m4a or Recording 1.ogg. Rename the take first if you want a different file name. The download link is revoked after the save starts. The player keeps its own link until you delete the take or leave the page.

Can I record another take without leaving the mic on?

Yes. After Stop the page returns to Ready. The next Record stops any leftover microphone stream before it asks for a new one, so the previous recording cannot keep the mic open. Takes stay in this tab until you delete them or leave. Download any take you want to keep before you close the page.
