Tools/Reaction & Aim Tests

APM Test

Measure actions per minute on a reflex grid, or count free clicks and keypresses. A finished run divides actions by the full duration. You get APM, EAPM, accuracy, peak speed and a rank. This is a browser test, not an RTS match.

A mouse icon needs a click and a keyboard icon needs that key. Tab to a tile and press Enter or Space to click it. A dark tile, or the wrong input, is a miss. Esc stops the run.

About APM

What APM means

APM is actions per minute: actions divided by the minutes you played. A finished 10-second run multiplies the count by 6, and a finished 30-second run multiplies it by 2. The raw count is not your APM. Strategy games such as StarCraft and Age of Empires show an in-game APM, but this page is a browser grid and a free counter, not an RTS match, so the two numbers are not the same. The grid is slower than mashing because each hit waits on a new tile.

How the two modes work

In the reflex grid, a tile lights up and you hit it; each hit lights another. A click or a key on a dark tile is a miss, except that hotkey mode ignores clicks and mouse mode ignores keys. Only the lit tile is correct. In mixed mode the icon has to match: a mouse icon wants a click, a keyboard icon wants that key. Hotkey mode maps the tiles to 1234, QWER, ASDF and ZXCV. Live APM counts scoring actions in a rolling 60-second window and never divides by less than one second. A finished run uses the full duration you picked. Peak APM is your best 5-second stretch.

The free counter has no targets. Every click in the box and every keypress counts once. Holding a key does not add more after the first press. Keys are read by their position, so on non-QWERTY layouts the tile labels match the physical keys.

APM vs. EAPM

Mashing the same key ten times does not do ten useful things, so effective APM (EAPM) leaves out spam. Here, an action is dropped from EAPM when it repeats the previous action within 100 ms. Games use stricter filters, but the idea is the same: high APM with low EAPM is mostly noise. In the grid, only correct hits count toward APM, so spam simply lowers your accuracy.

How to raise your APM

  • Use hotkeys for every build and ability, not the on-screen buttons.
  • Bind your army and buildings to control groups and cycle them by number.
  • Move the camera with location hotkeys or by tapping a control group twice, not by scrolling.
  • Practise accuracy first. Speed follows, and clean actions beat spam in a real game.

Limits worth knowing

The browser only sees the inputs your system passes on. Held keys are ignored after the first press, and Ctrl, Alt and Cmd shortcuts are left alone. Best scores are saved in this browser for each setup: grid input, difficulty and duration, or the free-counter length.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is APM calculated?

APM is actions divided by the minutes you played. On the grid that is correct hits. On the free counter it is every counted click and keypress. A finished 10-second run multiplies that count by 6, a finished 30-second run by 2, and a finished 60-second run by 1. The action count on screen is not your APM. Live APM uses a rolling window and never divides by less than one second, so the opening moments cannot spike. A run that finishes uses the full length you picked.

What counts as one action?

One click, tap or keypress counts once. Holding a key does not keep adding actions, because repeated key events are ignored. Mouse / touch mode counts pointer presses on the tiles and ignores the keyboard. Hotkey mode counts only the tile keys and ignores clicks. Mixed mode counts a click or a key, not both for a single press. Ctrl, Alt and Cmd shortcuts are ignored.

What if I hit a dark tile?

Only the lit tile is the right target. In mouse mode, a click or tap on a dark tile is a miss. In hotkey mode, the key for a dark tile is a miss and clicks are ignored. In mixed mode, a dark tile is a miss, and so is the wrong input on a lit tile: a mouse icon wants a click, a keyboard icon wants that key. Misses lower accuracy. Grid APM counts correct hits only.

What is EAPM?

EAPM means effective APM, and it applies to the free counter. An action that repeats the previous one within 100 milliseconds still counts in raw APM and is left out of EAPM. Separate presses are not the same as holding a key: a hold never adds extra actions at all. On the grid there is no EAPM number. Correct hits make the APM, and misses show up as lower accuracy.

Is this the same as StarCraft APM?

No. This is a browser reflex grid and a free click-and-key counter, not an RTS match. A game counts orders from the match, including commands this page never sees. The ranks are labels for your result on this page. They are not a ladder placement and they are not a pro rating.

When does the timer start and stop?

The clock starts on your first counted action and ends once, when the length you picked is up. Grid lengths are 30 and 60 seconds. The free counter also offers 10 seconds. Stop or Esc ends a run early. A finished run is scored over the full length. An early stop is scored over the time you played, at least half a second, and is not saved as a best.

Are best scores saved?

Yes, in this browser only. Grid bests are kept per input, difficulty and duration. Free-counter bests are kept per duration. Clearing site data for this site removes them. An early stop is shown and then left out of the best.
