About the spacebar clicker

How the test works

Choose a duration from 1 to 100 seconds. The clock starts on your first press, so you never lose time getting ready. Every fresh press of the space bar adds one hit. Holding the key down does nothing, because the operating system's key repeat is filtered out. When time runs out, the page ignores input for under a second so your last frantic presses do not clear the result. After that, one press returns you to the start screen, and the next press begins a new run. On a phone or tablet, tap the big SPACE pad instead.

Reading your score

Average per second is your total divided by the test length, the fairest number to compare. Peak burst is the most presses you landed inside any one-second window, which shows your top speed before fatigue sets in. The bar chart breaks the run into seconds (tenths for the 1 second test), so you can see where you slowed down. Most people manage 5 to 7 hits per second with one finger. Above 9 is very fast, and a steady 14 or more over 30 seconds usually means a macro rather than a hand.

Tips for a higher count

Rest your thumb or two fingers just above the key and use small, light presses rather than full strokes. Alternating two fingers is faster than one. Short tests reward pure speed. On 30 and 60 seconds, pace yourself, since forearm burnout drops most people by a third in the last stretch.

Testing the keyboard itself

A worn or cheap switch can miss presses or register two from one tap. If your count jumps oddly or a slow, careful run comes up short, compare it with a slow count on the spacebar counter. Note that browsers only see key events, and some wireless keyboards batch them, so very high rates can be undercounted.

FAQ

Spacebar clicker questions

How do I start the spacebar clicker?

Pick 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 or 100 seconds. The timer starts on your first press, so the wait before that press is not part of the run. Press the space bar, or click or tap the SPACE pad. While a test is not running, the space bar still opens the duration menu, toggles a question below, and activates other buttons. The duration you last picked is saved in this browser.

Does holding the space bar count as extra hits?

No. Only a fresh press counts. Repeat events the keyboard sends while the key is held down are ignored, and releasing the key adds nothing. On the pad, a hit registers when the pointer goes down: left click, finger or pen. Right click is ignored.

How are hits per second and peak burst worked out?

The final average is total hits divided by the duration you chose. The press that starts the clock is included. During the run, the live rate is hits so far divided by seconds elapsed. For the first quarter-second that divisor stays at 0.25 seconds, so one fast tap does not flash a huge rate. Peak burst is the most hits inside any rolling one-second window. The chart uses one bar per second, or one bar per 0.1 second on the 1 second test.

What do the rank names mean?

Rank is a label for your average on that run. 14 or more hits per second is Hummingbird, 11 is Woodpecker, 9 is Cheetah, 7 is Rabbit, 5.5 is House Cat, 4 is Turtle, and under 4 is Sloth. Those cutoffs are set by this page.

Are my best scores saved?

Yes, in this browser only, and separately for each duration. A run is stored when its hit total is higher than the one already saved. An equal total does not replace it. Nothing is uploaded. If storage is blocked, the test still runs and the best lasts only until you leave the page.

Why does the pad tell me to hold on at the end?

For 0.9 seconds after a run, presses are ignored so the tail of your clicking does not clear the result. After that, press the space bar or the pad once to return to the start screen, then press again to begin. Try again does the same reset, and it stays unavailable during that 0.9 second pause. Changing the duration also clears the current run.

Can I use the spacebar clicker on a phone?

Yes. Tap the SPACE pad. A mouse left-click or a stylus works the same way, and a hardware space bar works too. While the page is counting presses, it stops the space bar from scrolling the page.
