About this emoji translator

How it works

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.

In text to emoji mode, each word is checked against a dictionary of roughly 500 common words โ€” animals, food, weather, feelings, objects, places. Plurals and simple endings like -s, -ing and -edare matched back to the base word, so "dogs" and "running" still land. Pick "add emoji" to keep the word and put the emoji after it, or "replace" to swap the word out entirely.

In emoji to English mode, the text is scanned for emoji, longest sequence first, so ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ‘๏ธ reads as one thing rather than three. Each match is swapped for its meaning โ€” the slang reading where one exists, otherwise the official name. Paste a whole message and you get a whole sentence back, not a word list.

There is no account, no upload and no install. Once the page has loaded it keeps working with the connection off, which is the practical difference between this and an emoji translator app.

When people use it

  • Working out what a reply meant before answering it
  • Turning a plain caption into something with emoji for Instagram or TikTok
  • Parents and managers reading a message from someone half their age
  • Writing an emoji puzzle for a quiz night or a group chat game
  • Checking whether an emoji you like has a second meaning you did not intend

Emoji on iPhone, Android, WhatsApp and TikTok

People search for an iPhone to Android emoji translator, or an Apple to Samsung one, because the same message looks different on the two phones. Nothing is being translated. An emoji is a Unicode character โ€” ๐Ÿ™‚ is the same code point everywhere โ€” and what changes is the artwork each company draws for it. Apple has its own set, Google has Noto, Samsung draws its own in One UI, and WhatsApp and X ship theirs rather than using the phone's.

That is why a face you picked for its sly smirk can land as something blander on the other end. Vendors have redrawn emoji before: Google's burger famously had the cheese under the patty until 2017, and Apple replaced its pistol with a water gun in 2016, with the other platforms following. The characters never changed โ€” only the pictures.

Two practical notes. A brand-new emoji shows up as an empty box on a phone that has not been updated, because the font has no drawing for that code point yet; Unicode adds a batch most years, so there is always a lag. And TikTok has a second set of its own, typed as a shortcode in square brackets in a comment, which only renders inside TikTok โ€” paste one somewhere else and you get the bracketed word. Everything in the glossary above is standard Unicode, so it works in WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord, Slack and plain SMS.

Emoji puzzles, movie titles and name games

The replace style exists for games. Type a sentence, swap every word it recognises, and you have a quiz-night round: ๐Ÿถ ๐Ÿ• ๐ŸŒง๏ธ for "dog pizza rain". It works best with concrete nouns โ€” animals, food, weather, objects โ€” because those are the words a dictionary can match. Abstract words come back untouched, which is usually the right answer.

Emoji movie titles and emoji names are a different puzzle, and no tool decodes them reliably. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ‘‘ reads as The Lion King only if you already know the film; ๐Ÿ‘ป๐Ÿšซ is Ghostbusters by association, not by dictionary. These are rebuses โ€” they lean on sound, association and what the reader has seen โ€” so a word-for-word translator has nothing to go on. If you are writing an emoji quiz, keep the answer key. If you are solving one, use this page to get each emoji's meaning, then guess the phrase yourself.

Names work the same way. There is no name-to-emoji lookup that would be right; people build them by sound, like ๐Ÿ for "B" or ๐ŸŒŠ for a surname that starts with Wave. Fun to make, impossible to reverse without the key.

Wingdings, emoticons and other things called emoji

A Wingdings emoji translator solves a different problem. Wingdings is a Microsoft font from 1990, built from dingbats โ€” printers' ornaments โ€” where each keyboard letter is drawn as a symbol, so typing J gives a smiling face. The letters underneath are still ordinary letters. Select Wingdings text, set it back to a normal font, and the original words reappear. Nothing was encoded; only the typeface changed.

Emoji are the opposite: real characters with their own code points and names, drawn by whatever font your device uses. That is why they survive copy and paste between apps and Wingdings does not. Emoticons like :-) are a third thing again โ€” punctuation you read sideways, which many keyboards quietly turn into ๐Ÿ™‚ as you type.

Where emoji go wrong

  • ๐Ÿ‘ is not neutral.Plenty of people send it to mean "got it". Plenty of younger readers take it as curt or annoyed. If the message matters, spend the four extra words.
  • ๐Ÿ˜‚ does not read the same everywhere. Most of the world uses it for laughing so hard you cry. Some readers see the tears first and take it as grief, and many younger users treat it as a sign you are older.
  • Some emoji carry a second meaning you did not pick. ๐Ÿ‘ and ๐Ÿ† are the obvious pair, but ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿงข and ๐Ÿšฉ all say something about a person rather than a fruit or a flag.
  • An emoji can be treated as agreement. A Saskatchewan court ruled in 2023 that a thumbs-up sent in reply to a contract photo accepted the deal, and ordered the sender to pay about 82,000 Canadian dollars; the appeal court upheld it. Sending ๐Ÿ‘ to a quote is not the same as thinking about it.
  • Stacking emoji flattens tone. Three of them after a sentence reads as excitement to some people and as sarcasm to others. One is usually enough.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I translate emoji to English?

Switch to "emoji to English", paste the message, and read the line underneath. Emoji with a well-known slang use get that reading rather than the dictionary name, so ๐Ÿ’€ comes back as "that was hilarious" rather than "skull".

Can it turn English into emoji?

Yes, that is the default mode. Type a normal sentence and the matching words pick up an emoji after them. Switch to the replace style if you want a message made of emoji only, which is what most people want for a puzzle or a caption.

Why do emoji look different on iPhone and Android?

There is nothing to convert. An emoji is a Unicode character, identical on every device. What changes is the font drawing it: Apple, Google, Samsung and WhatsApp each draw their own set. A ๐Ÿ˜… sent from an iPhone arrives on Android as the same character with a different face, so no iPhone to Android emoji translator is needed.

What do ๐Ÿ’€, ๐Ÿงข and ๐Ÿ™ƒ mean?

๐Ÿ’€ means "I am dead" as in something was very funny. ๐Ÿงข means cap, which means a lie, so ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿงข is "no cap" โ€” I am serious. ๐Ÿ™ƒ usually marks a fake "everything is fine". The searchable glossary above covers dozens more.

Is there a sign language emoji translator?

Not really, and it is worth being straight about it. The hand emoji โ€” ๐Ÿ‘Œ โœŒ๏ธ ๐ŸคŸ ๐Ÿ‘‹ โ€” are gestures, not a signed language. ๐ŸคŸ does come from the ASL sign for "I love you", but there is no emoji alphabet that maps onto ASL or BSL, so anything advertised as a full ASL emoji translator is guessing.

Is there an emoji translator app, or does Google Translate do emoji?

Google Translate handles languages, not emoji, and phone keyboards only suggest an emoji as you type a word. This page does both directions in a browser with no install, no sign-in and no upload, and it keeps working offline once loaded โ€” which covers what most people wanted an app for.

Can it decode an emoji movie title or an emoji name?

No tool can do that reliably, including this one. Emoji film titles and names are rebuses built on sound and association rather than word-for-word meaning, so ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ‘‘ only reads as The Lion King if you already know the film. Use the translator to get each emojiโ€™s meaning, then work out the phrase yourself.

What is a Wingdings emoji translator?

Wingdings is a Microsoft symbol font from 1990 where each keyboard letter is drawn as a picture, so typing J shows a smiling face. It is a font, not an encoding: switch the text back to a normal typeface and the original letters return. Emoji are real Unicode characters, which is why they survive copy and paste and Wingdings does not.

Does it work for WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok messages?

Yes, because all of them use standard Unicode emoji. Copy the message, paste it in, and the meanings come back. The one exception is TikTokโ€™s own hidden set, typed as a word in square brackets, which only renders inside TikTok and shows as bracketed text anywhere else.

Is emoji translator a real job?

It has been one at least once. In December 2016 a London agency, Today Translations, advertised for an emoji translator, drew about 100 applicants, and hired Keith Broni the following year to advise companies on how emoji read across cultures and age groups. The work was interpretation and cultural advice rather than word swapping.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The dictionaries ship with the page and the translation runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and closing the tab leaves no copy behind.

How accurate are the meanings?

Treat them as the common reading, not a verdict. Emoji slang moves fast and shifts by country, age and friend group โ€” the same ๐Ÿ‘ reads as friendly from one person and cold from another. Use this to get the gist of a message, then check with the sender if it matters.
