About the 6 Minute Walk Test

The 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT) measures how far someone can walk in six minutes on a flat surface. It is a simple, standardized way to assess functional capacity and response to therapy in many cardiopulmonary conditions.

What it measures

  • Submaximal exercise capacity over six minutes
  • Integrated heart, lung, circulation, and muscle function
  • Change over time with treatment or rehab

Equations used

  • Men: (7.57 × height) − (5.02 × age) − (1.76 × weight) − 309
  • Women: (2.11 × height) − (2.29 × weight) − (5.78 × age) + 667
  • LLN: predicted − 153 m (men) or − 139 m (women)

Inputs explained

  • Height in centimeters, weight in kilograms
  • Age in years (adult equations)
  • Distance walked is the total 6MWD in meters

Clinical context

  • Used in heart failure, PH, COPD, and ILD assessment
  • Low % predicted or distance below LLN may signal worse function
  • Always interpret with the full clinical picture
